These aren’t the stiff studio portraits you remember as a kid.
Modern portraits create images that move and feel just like you do. A studio experience that
is
simple,
caring and intuitive. And custom art for your walls to remember this moment in time. All
this
together
in one place. We know, right? Chef’s kiss.
Welcome to Ranjani Groth Studios.
Don’t get us wrong, we l o v e to see your natural smile. But today’s approach to modern portraits is about also capturing genuine emotion and organic movement. The way your toddler snuggles just so against Dad’s shoulder. The specific way sisters can make each other laugh the loudest. Just how good motherhood looks on you.
We’ve all been there, right? Stiff photos that all look the same. Feeling like a number on a call sheet not an actual family. Instead of dragging the fam through all that, our studio time is simple and relaxed without ever sacrificing style or quality. We think of it as unfussy luxury (right down to stocking our bathroom with everything you could need and legit good coffee). Your experience is personalized from the very beginning, because you’re a person to us, never a number. Imagine that.
I’ve lived in more than a dozen places across the globe, yet wherever I call home, my camera is always at my side. As a teen, I’d drag a chair into the Illinois woods and convince my sisters to wear prom dresses for photo shoots with our mom’s old film camera. I found connection with my hosts in Tajikistan, though we didn’t share a language, through the lens of my camera. In college, I studied photojournalism and worked for more than a decade as a wedding photographer. All those couples taught me how to be an expert wrangler, problem solver (I always carry a mini-sewing kit now) and mood lightener. I pivoted to studio portraits five years ago, and haven’t looked back. Today, I l o v e the happy chaos of everyone (plus the dog!) piling in for a group photo. The interaction there—between grandmas and grandkids, moms and sons—is just brimming with life.
While Ranjani’s in the studio
creating
the
whole
experience, you can find me knee-deep in spreadsheets and admin duty.
(Hyperfocus is
like my ADHD superpower.)
I’m not all focus though. I’ve got some real loveable labrador energy that
you’ll
get to
experience with some sweet dad jokes and my ability to make babies laugh. (Also
a
superpower? I think so.)
Ask Ranjani how I attempted to woo her. It involved a bike ride and breaking my
collarbone in front of her. True love! I promise to be more careful when you’re
in
the
studio.
Our photographers are experts at using light and shadow to give each portrait warmth and depth. With color photography, it sometimes feels like the person is competing against the background, but black and white is focused and true to your feelings.
“Ranjani’s very professional and assuring. That lady had it totally under control (and) it was abundantly clear after speaking with her that she knew her business. Just a conversation about the process can really set you at ease. I cannot say enough about the care she takes in planning.” —Lanie
